FFP2 Face Mask Ideal for every day use, however, do you know the Meaning of FFP protection classes? and what are ffp2 masks suitable for? this article we’ll discuss about FFP2 mask.

ffp2 mask

Some European countries, including Germany and Austria, made the use of an FFP2 level of respirator mask mandatory in most public areas during the height of the pandemic in an effort to combat the spread of new, more transmissible variations of the virus, with other countries considering following suit.

What is an FFP2 mask?

Firstly, the FFP2 is actually classed as a respirator, rather than a mask, meaning they offer better protection. FFP stands for “Filtering Face Piece”, with the number corresponding to the level of protection the piece provides, 1 being the lowest level of protection and 3 being the highest.

What is the difference between disposable masks and the FFP2 masks?

The disposable surgical mask is your typical blue or white medical face mask and comes with a CE marking. It is single-use and provides 3 layers of protection against bacteria, viruses, and other large droplets. Disposable masks should never be re-used.

A respirator or FFP2 mask is a multi-layered mask. It is usually white and is designed to fit closely around the mouth and nose. These masks reduce exposure to airborne particles and we now know Covid-19 is an airborne virus.

The FFP2 face mask is approved by the World Health Organisation

The WHO also recommends the use of respirator masks such as the FFP2 and N95 by healthcare workers during aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs), as they have a tighter fit than surgical masks and therefore offer a higher level of protection.

When I should be wearing an FFP2 mask?

Protection Against Respiratory Viruses

Masks lower a person’s exposure to respiratory infections such as COVID19, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and pertussis (whooping cough).

If you test positive for COVID-19, masking for 10 days is recommended. See COVID-19 isolation guidance for more details.

If you believe you were exposed and will be in contact with someone who is higher risk, consider wearing a high-quality mask.

If you are at higher-risk of becoming severely ill, consider wearing a high-quality mask (respirator) when you are in an indoor public setting with poor ventilation, or when you are traveling on public transportation.

People who are at higher risk for severe respiratory infections include:

  • Older adults (aged 50 years and older)
  • People with certain medical conditions such as a chronic disease or cancer
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • People who are pregnant or were recently pregnant
  • People with disabilities
  • People who live in congregate care facilities, such as a skilled nursing facility
  • Children under 5, with greatest risk in infants

Protection Against Harmful Environmental Exposures

Below are a few examples of when masks are highly recommended during an environmental exposure.

Wildfire Smoke

When a wildfire, wildfire smoke, or poor air quality is in your area, wearing an FFP2 respirator can help filter out harmful smoke particles, if you must go outside. When fitted correctly, an FFP2 respirator that fits over the nose and mouth can significantly reduce breathing in harmful particles.

Valley Fever

In certain areas of California, the fungus that causes Valley fever grows in the soil and may be in outdoor dust. While working or spending time outdoors in dusty areas where Valley fever is common, wear a properly fitted mask approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). A N95,FFP2 or higher-level respirator, may help protect you from breathing in dust and fungal spores that can cause Valley fever.

5 key benefits of using an FFP2 mask

  1. At least 94% filtration of all particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter or larger
  2. Two way filtration, protecting the wearer and others
  3. Higher fluid resistance
  4. Better fit than cloth and surgical masks
  5. Made with breathable filtering layers

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a huge increase of public interest in face mask and hygiene supplies. Compared with conventional medical face masks, FFP2 masks provide not only protection for those around you, but also increased self-protection against infectious particles, droplets and aerosols. Here at NW Fabric company, we supply a selection of face mask raw materials, which including FFP1/2/3 Meltblown, PP spunbond and needle punched nonwoven.
